Forensic Specialties Accreditation Board, Inc.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FSAB
The FSAB is a voluntary accreditation organization that objectively assesses, accredits, and monitors forensic specialty certification organizations (conformity assessment bodies) seeking accreditation.
Accreditation provides objective evidence that forensic specialty organizations meet or exceed a minimum set of generally recognized international quality standards.
For CABs, FSAB applies its own standards which are consistent with ISO/IEC 17024:2012 Conformity assessment – General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons.
There are no accreditation bodies for accreditation boards. Accreditation boards can choose to follow international standards, which FSAB has done. The FSAB uses its own standards which are based on the ISO/IEC 17011:2017 Standards as guidance for its ongoing internal competence, consistent operation, and impartiality in the assessment and accreditation of forensic specialty certification organizations. The FSAB is engaged in continual quality improvement with a future goal of self-declaration of conformance with ISO/IEC 17011: 2017 Standards.
Accreditation
An FSAB application and supporting documentation should be submitted by the CAB to the FSAB Administrative Office no later than May 1 in any given year. Notification of accreditation status is made by March 1 of the following year.
The FSAB Standards are based on both recognized national and international standards with the FSAB’s own modifications having been made to accommodate the unique and diverse nature of the forensic specialty certification organizations. In general, the FSAB standards for accreditation are based on internationally recognized standards contained in ISO/IEC 17024:2012, which establishes the requirements for an organization certifying individuals. These standards include the development and maintenance of a certification scheme that comports with best practices.
Please see FSAB Procedure 4: Guidance for Parties Interested in Accreditation for detailed information.
